The Advantages of Professional Diagnosis
  • It can be of benefit emotionally and psychologically to have someone impartial tell you that is not your fault you are the way you are.

  • It can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and others.

  • It provides you with the vocabulary and context to explain your problems or differences to people when needed.

  • If you have always felt like you don't belong it can make you feel like you do belong to something.

  • It may help you in claiming benefits or services you require.

  • You may want to pursue a course of treatment.

  • It can be reassuring to have a professional opinion.

  • Some people will only take you seriously if you can refer to a professionals opinion.

I have had lots of feedback from people about their Reactions to the diagnostic criteria, and what most people describe is emotional turmoil... on the one hand they feel intense relief, joy, and excitement, and on the other, anger, caution, and confusion. Not all actually need a diagnosis in a medical sense, many just want answers and maybe validation as a human being that has up until that time been disturbingly lacking.

You don't have to get a professional diagnosis if you do not want one and don't feel you need one. It is just a label... it doesn't change who or what you are.

No one should be pressured, hurried or nagged into getting a diagnosis. It is a big decision... it is not like getting diagnosed with the measles or flu... it reaches deep into your psychological world and alters how you view yourself and others. Friends and relatives who are confused by an individual they suspect of having Asperger's syndrome not sharing their enthusiasm for rushing to the doctors, take note.

The Advantages of Self Diagnosis
  • You might be satisfied with your own evaluation.

  • It gives you more of an option of privacy - you don't have to tell anyone what you think.

  • Most people in the AS community will accept you on the basis of your self diagnosis.

  • You may not require any services or benefits for which a professional diagnosis would be required.

  • It can be difficult to get a diagnosis sometimes, especially as you get older.
